Ask almost any person about a “luxury watch” and they will most likely think about Rolex, was this always the case? Why has Rolex become seen this way in the public perception?
Not at all, even the opposite!

Here’s Fidel Castro, who used to wear a Rolex GMT Master and also a Rolex Day-Date, sometimes even both at the same time:

Even his friend and co-revolutionary Che Guevara was wearing a Rolex:

Did they wear them because they were luxury items? Absolutely not, they wore them because they were precise and tough. Extremely important when coordinating military and dealing with politics around the globe!

The move from Rolex to become a luxury brand started with time because people wanted to imitate those political leaders, athletes and explorers around the world.

The marketing from Rolex was perfectly focused on adventurers:

Nowadays Rolex watches are probably not even worn outdoors but only in meeting rooms and nightclubs.

Now don’t get it twisted, Rolex watches are still super tough and precise and wearing one means you can probably wear it forever and even give it to your kids! But their design as well as their marketing has fundamentally changed.

It is now appealing more to the luxury crowd:

Roger Federer probably doesn’t go out to explore mountains or deep dive into sea caves to look for hidden treasures, but he’s representing what Rolex today stands for: excellence and greatness.

Even this ad sums it up perfectly:

With the old James Bond movies you had a perfect scenario for the Submariner (although rumour has it that the James Bond creator was thinking about an Explorer, not a Submariner, but that is a different question for another day!):

Rugged and precise to attack the enemy, but looks good enough in a tuxedo after you get away. Since then it slowly but surely moved away from the explorers of the world more into the hands of the politicians, business man/women and athletes that play tennis.

If you follow the advertisements, you can see the slow change exactly, here an ad from the 80s:

What does it say? World leaders wear Rolexes!

What about this one from the mid-90s?

(Luxury) Athletes wear Rolexes! So it appeals more to golf players and tennis players. And who watches gold and tennis players? Exactly, people with money!

So Rolex started sponsoring tennis and golf tournaments, sometimes even becoming the official (and precise) timepiece of the tournament.

    That’s where the switch happened.

You can even see that they cater to a different audience by their design choices. Look at the legendary Oyster bracelet from the past:

And now look at the more recent Oyster bracelet on the Rolex Batman:

The middle parts of the links are shiny, making it a much more “bling-y” watch than it has to be! But that is because the audience has changed from professional divers to desk divers. From mountain explorers to meeting room explorers!
